The bag brand of the bag queen MCM - SUUNG- JOO KIM

MCM

The history of the bag brand of the suitcase king MCM

(Michael Cromer Munich)

He invented a label that is known all over the world, MCM.

In the 1980s, MCM generated annual sales of up to 500 million deutschmarks.

Michael was born Michael Kromer in 1939. He began a career as a model and actor and changed his name from Kromer to Cromer simply because it sounded more "international".

Michael loved beauty and was a great actor.

He loved beauty and aesthetics and liked to surround himself with them. Great passions for beautiful women also belonged to Michael Cromer and he liked to show himself with them.

A great talent of his, Michael Cromer.

One of Cromer's great talents was his understanding and talent for marketing. He knew how to present things that seemed exaggerated at the moment but appeared very witty at second glance. He had success with his marketing activities, such as the MCM Ferrari 520 TR in which he drove through Munich in an eye-catching colour, causing a sensation.

In Munich in the Kurfürstenstrasse, Michael Cromer opened a hairdressing salon together with his wife Mara in 1972. Numerous celebrities visited this hairdresser's shop.

A logo was also designed for this store, the letters MCM and a laurel wreath with double bow.

In the early days, the letters MCM stood for "Modern Coiffure München".

For a hairdresser client, Michael Cromer designed white cosmetic bags bearing the MCM LOGO. Because of the special preferences of people who carried Louis Vuitton suitcases, he then designed suitcases and travel bags himself.

The cognac-coloured suitcases bags and accessories were created, and an entire collection was born. He produced products made of imitation pigskin, which he called Viseto. A brass lock also crowned these bags as a fastener.

The demand for his suitcases and bags increased enormously. He renamed his company, and called it "Modern Creation Münchner Reisegepäck GmbH".

Now he was the German bag king.

He saw himself as the German answer to Louis Vuitton.

Where there is success there is also much envy. The tax investigation took aim at Cromer. An anonymous complaint was filed with the IRS in April 1998.

40 million were at stake, and this was the high sum Cromer was supposed to have evaded.

Then Cromer fled to Switzerland. Credit negotiations with his bank failed and as a result Cromer could no longer pay his bills. He was convicted of tax evasion in 2000 and sentenced to two years' imprisonment on probation.

In the meantime, his bank sold the trademark rights to a Swiss holding group. Michael Cromer still tried everything with his private fortune to ensure that this sale did not succeed, but in vain.

In 2007, Cromer died in Straßlach, in his terraced house in Munich.

Now MCM - owner is SUNG-JOO KIM

She is the bag queen from KOREA

She bought the Munich bag brand MCM almost a decade and a half ago and took it over in 2005. Quite unusual as a Korean woman to acquire a German company.

Kim runs the company strictly, she shows herself to be a tough negotiator and for many competitors she is a serious competitor.

Ca. 500 MCM stores exist and are sold through all channels, such as the internet, own shops, wholesalers and partners. She has production in Korea and Italy and works with around three hundred factories.

In the meantime, Kim has managed to make the company stable again and for years Kim has been giving about ten per cent of her profits to charitable organisations.
